Summary on Grant Application Form |
Focal atherosclerosis is the major cause of death and morbidity in western societies. Local haemodynamic factors and vessel wall mechanics are likely major determinants underlying atheroma formation at specific sites. Advances in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging techniques have enabled in vivo measurements of time-dependent blood velocity profiles and vessel geometry, but accurate determination of temporarily and spatially varying shear-stress patterns and knowledge of wall mechanical behaviour are still precluded. In this project we intend to develop a generic advanced coupled fluid/solid mechanics model. The model will simulate not only the fluid flow, but also the mechanics of the wall which is in contact with the fluid. It will be validated by comparison of predictive data within vivo magnetic resonance flow and wall movement measurements from carotoid bifurcations of healthy humans and patients with atherosclerotic plaques. The principle outcome of this research will be the generation of a validated model of a generic nature for fluid/wall interaction problems. In addition to use in the study of human atheroma formation, the code may also be a valuable investigative tool in aeroeplasticity involving flutter analysis, and in actively controlled structures in a fluid field including nonlinearity and unsteady effects.
