Sensing tips with different magnetic properties give MFM images with different information. No model exists of tip/sample interactions which allows reliable interpretation. The probe coercivity is of critical importance to the image formed since if the stray field from the sample is greater than the probe's coercivity, random remagnetisation of the probe occurs during scanning, introducing image artefacts. It is important therefore to develop tips with ultra-high coercivity to minimise this effect. To alleviate uncertainties regarding tip remagnetisation, an alternative approach is to use a probe with a coercivity as small as possible such that predictable switching of the probe's moment occurs. Thus tips are required which have both as high a coercivity as possible and as low a coercivity as possible. In addition, tips are required with low moment which avoid perturbing the domain structure of low coercivity samples. Tips will be sputter coated with a variety of low coercivity coatings and high coercivity coatings. The magnetic characteristics of the tip will be determined using Lorentz microscopy. MFM images will be obtained from model and commercially important magnetic materials and thin films. Modelling will be undertaken to correlate experimental images.
