Summary on Grant Application Form |
The inevitability of change is the inspiration behind the concept of the Active Model which has two key features. The executable process model provides a high level coordinative mechanism for users and tools which can be evolved, ensuring a consistent relation can be maintained between the executable model and its real world domain. Organisations can gain a flexible and evolvable infrastructure, by providing active process models; a natural way of addressing the problem of legacy systems. We believe that this use of active models reflects a fundamentally new approach to the development and maintenance of IT systems. Like all new 'paradigms' it has been slow to penetrate the world of practice, with the exception of a few small-scale pioneering applications. An important feature of the project will be to understand the barriers that are currently holding back wide adoption of our paradigm, and to elaborate a 'migration methodology'. The project will allow the investigation of a range of fundamental issues relating to the evolution of active models and the adaptation of the broader system of which they are a part. For example, how this change process should be managed, what support is required, how human/organisational issues should be addressed.
