Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme will investigate the problems of legacy systems in commercial and industrial organisations from an applied management and information systems perspective. From previous research and consulting experience, much of which has been published in prestigious academic journal articles such as Strategic Management Journal and Sloan Management Review, an outline of alternative systems design strategies has been developed. The first part of this project will be to investigate the scale of the problem and develop a theoretical framework. This will develop a constructs to better understand the problems of legacy systems in the context of technical developments, a complex and unstable business environment, and changing organisational forms. The research programme will complement the work done in this area by the process modelling group of the Manchester University Computer Science department and joint case work will be conducted. Close relationships are enjoyed with a wide range of international organisations, and close collaboration with business will be a central part of the research design, management, implementation and dissemination of research results.
