Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposal is to develop temperature control and theory for liquid-cell SPM techniques. We will construct a variable temperature liquid cell stage with temperature range -60C to +60C, based on a cascade of Peltier effect heat pumps. This sample stage will therefore be particularly well suited for studies of self-assembly in biological and surfactant systems and for investigating surface melting and the mechanisms of crystal growth. The specific systems we wish to study are: (i) alcohols and alkanes on graphite and clays (ii) aqueous ionic and surfactant solutions at clay surfaces and (iii) surface melting of hydrogen bonded systems. This experimental programme will be conducted by the PI and an EPSRC funded research student, on a Topometrix Discoverer SPM. To complement these experiments the CoI and PI will use theory and modelling to find the optimum conditions for AFM imaging of surfaces under liquids. To achieve this we will; (i) calculate the effect of a dielectric liquid on the van der Waals tip-surface interaction, and thereby determine the effective Hamaker constant, and (ii) use quantum-chemical modelling and computer simulation to study liquid molecules and charging effects at the tip and surface.
