The research will exploit the meso-level lattice based software developed in the Cambridge group over the past ten years. Uniquely, the research proposed for the visit will explore the effect of filler particles on the development of polymer microstructure as a function of particular particle-filler interactions (e.g. homeotropic and planar molecular orientations at the interface). In particular, the work will determine the ability of filler particles to trap disclinations line defects, and to oppose the macroscopic orienting influence of applied fields. This opposition to overall alignment is seen as a route to the avoidance of the extremely weak weld lines which limit the performance of liquid crystalline polymer mouldings. The software will be developed to permit particle diffusion under the influence of elastic distortion fields with the particular objective of observing particle 'clumping'.
