Summary on Grant Application Form
FED (field emission display) systems require blue phosphors to emit light at considerably lower voltages than CRTs (cathode ray tubes). Recently, we have made progress in the development of phosphors operating at low voltages. It is proposed that this work is extended and more emphasis will be placed on studies that will give a pointer to the mechanism of efficient light emission processes taking place. An additional object of the investigation is to reduce the mean particle size of powder systems to 1-2 microns to improve the information density available for a given display area. As part of this programme, it is proposed that powder phosphors will be synthesised by sol-gels and microwave techniques.
