Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new variant of the waveguiding techniques used to study director profiles in LC cells, the fully leaky technique in both reflection and transmission will be used to examine the detailed director profiles in a range of commercial cells. Up till now the waveguide techniques, which are exquisitely sensitive to director details needed to be used with special test cells - this will not be the case in this new study. Thus we will be able to explore fully the surface anchoring and surface memory effects in a range of important structures. The knowledge gained will not only test theories of surface anchoring but will be used to provide guidance to improved cell fabrication and hence device function.
