Summary on Grant Application Form |
Surface treatment of a variety of paper products, photographic films and magnetic tapes involves application of a thin layer of liquid film on the surface of the substrate. The rate of coating of these products is limited due to air entrainment (skipping) at the wetting line. Air entrainment is the most serious factor in limiting productivity of high-grade coated paper and photographic films. I propose with the present proposal a theoretical approach to study the mechanism of air entrainment in coating operations and to recommend novel techniques for its suppression. The benefits to the coating industry, resulting from this research, will be better understanding of the air entrainment mechanism and invention of novel techniques for suppressing air entrainment at higher machine speeds, resulting in higher productivity.
