Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main aim of the project is to utilise tin-plate scrap steel in conjunction with incinerator scrap and aluminium cans for promotion the formation of stable intermetallic phases in ferritic matrix while hot-forming. This aim, if fulfilled, could potentially lead to a major increase in the utilisation of tin-based and incinerator scrap in EC countries. The proposed research is supported in kinds by the British Steel. The programme of experimental work will require melting three different grades of steels with suitable scrap additions for promoting the formation of multi-component intermetallic precipitates in ferritic matrix. In the programme of experimental work, the kinetics and thermodynamics of precipitation reaction will be examined and characterised by analytical SEM/TEM and surface analysis techniques. The investigation will also establish a relationship between the relative concentrations of dissolved interstitial elements in relation to the intermetallic phase forming reactive metals such as A1, Ti, Zr etc. Hot-forming trials will be simulated by using British Steel's Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. Hot-formed products from large heat trails at BSC will be examined for the suitability of the finished product.
