Summary on Grant Application Form |
Detailed theoretical investigations will be made of positron collisions with simple atoms such as hydrogen and helium at relatively low energies where several inelastic channels, including positron formation, are open. Similar studies will also be made for collisions of positronium with atomic hydrogen. A multichannel version of the Kohn variational method will be used with very flexible trial functions containing many linear variational parameters to represent all the innerparticle correlations. Simpler versions of this technique have previously been used by the proposer to obtain accurate values of the cross sections for elastic scattering and positronium formation in positron collisions with hydrogen, helium and lithium. Particular attention will be given to the features rising from the coupling between the channels are expected to be observed. The results will provide valuable comparisons with the experimentally measured cross sections.
