Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this programme is to provide information necessary for the development of laminated material composed of alternate layers of ceramic and foamed metal. Particular attention will be paid to the behaviour under flexural and distributed compressive loading. Static, ballistic and blast testing will be carried out. Mechanisms can be proposed by which the performance of such material may be superior to that with corresponding void-free metal layers (which is the subject of a current project at Cambridge) at least on the basis of energy absorption per unit areal density. The effects of foam void content, void size and shape, metal yielding characteristics and metal oxide content will be studied over a range of ceramic / metal foam proportions. Nanoindentation will be carried out to study the behaviour of cell walls within the foam. Deformation and fracture processes will be modelled, with the aim of predicting the effects of loading conditions and laminate microstructure on the fracture energy of the material. This will build on successful modelling work currently being completed on the behaviour of (dense) metal / ceramic laminates.
