Summary on Grant Application Form
Magnetic recording at submicron trackwidth by a conventional thin-film head is prohibited by it's low efficiency and high noise caused by the hard axis state domains, or edge-curling walls in its submicron pole-tip strips. This project investigates a novel thin-film recording head which is free from the above problems and is particularly suitable for submicron trackwidth recording. Key features of the head are to use the film thickness of the pole-tip strip, instead of the strip width as in conventional thin-film head, to define recording trackwidth, a dual-axial anisotropy magnetic back-core to achieve high efficiency and low noise, and a FIB precision machining technique for the fabrication of the front gap. The proposed research program includes the investigation of the fabrication process of the magnetic head, the dual-axial magnetic head core material and the FIB precision machining for the front gap; the examination of the domain dynamics and the dual-axial head core and the evaluation of recording performance of the head. It is intended that this project will open a new approach to the study and realisation of submicron trackwidth magnetic recording, which is currently a key issue for the breakthrough of 10 Gb/in2 packing density recording.
