Summary on Grant Application Form |
Portsmouth's work in the area of Ka-band digital satellite communications is concerned with optimising system availability and data throughput within the domain of a VSAT network. System design approach based on a fixed link budget margin at those frequencies leads to insufficient channel utilisation. A fade countermeasure system design that would employ adaptive modulation is based on the strategy of dynamically trading off data throughput with the requirement to maintain the link. The proposed programme aims to develop the necessary hardware (modem and channel simulator) for an experimental set-up that will yield positive results in the domain of implementation of the fade countermeasure. An all-digital modulator based on direct digital signal synthesis, together with a demodulator, implemented mainly in digital signal processing technology will be developed and tested. An IF channel simulator capable of creating channel impairments akin to those on Ka-band will be implemented and used in the experimental set up to produce the results.
