Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project would use socio-economic and demographic data derived from GIS to improve rail demand models. It would examine the relationship betwen the number of rail trips and the catchment area of a station, identifying the latter as the specification of population which provides the best model. The data set would contain several thousand observations and would examine over 50 stations. This would then provide the basis for inclusion of detailed variables relating to the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of the catchment area to determine their effects on rail demand and elasticities. To support this analysis, we would develop joint models of access mode/station choisce on a large data set of rail travellers to be collected by on-train surveys and make use of data indicating the postcode origins of rail traveller. The end result would be a much closer link of rail demand and GIS data than has previously been the case.
