Air injection can offer unique benefits and technical opportunities for improved oil recovery in many candidate reservoirs, Interest for post waterflooded deep, light oil reservoir in the North Sea/Western Europe is primarily motivated by the opportunity to use air as a cheap source of injection gas, Oxygen in the injected air reacts with hydrocarbons in the reservoir (Low Temperature Oxidation) producing in situ nitrogen and/or flue gases for immiscible or miscible gas displacement,. The research aims to identify the reaction regimes and relevant low temperature and high temperature oxidation (LTO and HTO) kinetics of a few selected North Sea light crude oils for the purpose of developing a composite screen-reaction model. An accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC) and a specially developed DISC reactor will be used to investigate the crude oil exothermicity and obtain measured kinetic parameters. The model will enable prediction as to whether a potential candidate reservoir is suitable for air injection - primarily LTO, to generate in situ displacement gases. The LTO kinetics model developed can be used for numerical modelling studies of reservoirs.
