Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will first construct a high temperature miniature tensometer for direct tensile testing of epitaxial layers at temperatures up to 100c. Then a series of semiconductor strain-balanced superlattices (InGaAs on InP substrates) will be grown by the Sheffield Central Facility. Tensile strength will be measured as a function of layer thickness and layer strains. We expect to find dramatically improved tensile strength together with the possibility of designing the structure for a specific elastic limit. In parallel, the growth of superlattices based on aluminium and alloys available in a III-Growth reactor will be developed by Dr Missous at UMIST. These alloys may include AlBe, AlSi, AlGa or AlIn. When the quality is comparable with that of the semiconductor layers, a similar mechanical testing programme will start. We expect to be able to demonstrate enhanced strength at temperatures above the normal limit for aluminium alloys.
