Most defects which can lead to failure of GIS generate partial discharge (PD) activity that can be detected in the UHF range by using couplers fitted to the GIS. In the proposed research programme, a measurement system will be developed to calibrate the frequency response on these couplers. The system will ensure correct and uniform performance of UHF coupler sets and will be used to optimise new coupler designs. The effect on the UHF signals of obstacles such as gas barriers, corners, insulating posts and T-junctions will be investigated using a combination of FDTD simulation and experimental work. The results will define the UHF attenuation caused by typical GIS components, enabling optimal location of couplers on the GIS.New types of external UHF coupler will be developed which are suitable for retrofitting to GIS that do not have internal couplers. Designs to be investigated include window, bolt-hole and barrier edge couplers. A technique for injecting UHF signals to measure the attenuation between adjacent couplers in GIS will also be developed so that adequate PD monitoring sensitivity can be ensured.This research will promote international acceptance of the new UHF monitoring technology, in which the UK presently has a world lead.
