Aerodynamic Particle Sizers represent one of the most important classes of instrument for real-time particle measurement. They are used in industries involving powder or spray products (eg pharmaceutical, ceramics, and food processing) to assist process control and quality assurance, and also find application in research facilities where rapid assessment of particle size spectra and airborne particle behaviour is required (eg in aerosol research or assessment of 'clean' areas). However the instruments suffer a serious limitation: the measured size can be grossly affected by particle shape. Non-spherical solid particles can be under- or (more rarely) over-sized depending on particle orientation at the instant of measurement, whilst liquid droplets are invariably undersized (depending upon the droplet's volume, viscosity, and surface tension). The Applicant has previously developed a laser scattering instrument for the rapid characterisation of airborne particle shape. An opportunity has thus been created to investigate the integration of aerodynamic sizing and shape characterisation into a single new dual-parameter instrument offering aerodynamic sizing with on-line correction for particle shape effects, and the simultaneous generation of both aerodynamic size and particle shape spectra. The new instrument would offer significant advantages over existing instrumentation and would have no direct commercial rival.
