It is proposed to produce composite polymer microparticles comprising polymer, a dense core, and functionalised surfaces, for use in separation processes. The particles will be designed to provide a much larger specific interfacial area compared to those encountered in conventional solid-liquid spearation processes. It will be possible to vary the overall particle density by changing the proportions of the different components and by selecting the core material. Sedimentation characteristics will be governed by the overall density and size of the composites. Enhanced sedimentation will be developed, if required, by selecting magnetic core materials and using magnetic fields. The particles will be characterised by photon correlation spectroscopy, microscopy and by using a disc centrifuge photosediometer.The performance of the particles as a separation process will be investigated in the recovery of metal ions from acqueous feeds. Studies will include identification of particle characteristics which improve contaminant extraction, sedimentation and reversibility for contaminant recovery; equilibrum and kinetics of extraction; and particle life and stability. Extraction performance will be compared with that of commercial ion exchange resins for which data has already been obtained at Imperial College.
