Summary on Grant Application Form |
We propose to extend our existing work with ion traps by building on our strengths and moving into new and promising areas of research. We propose a programme of work including new studies of trap dynamics using techniques developed in previous grants and applied here in such a way as to allow much more information about laser cooling to be extracted. A novel type of trap, the linear combined trap, will also be investigated, using our established techniques. This work will be supported by extending our successful computer simulation program for the study of all aspects of laser cooling and trap dynamics. We are already studying the quantum Zeno effect, but we see an exciting opportunity for development of this work with the recently-proposed level schemes for verifying the true quantum Zeno effect on a state incorporating decay. Finally, we see great potential for the application of sympathetic cooling to molecules and metallic clusters in traps, and we wish to perform pilot experiments in this area to test the feasibility of this technique, which if successful could have applications in several areas.
