This proposal describes the synthesis of a series of nucleotide-like 'molecular recognition' units (A) to which are appended specific polar functionalities. Complementary to A is a second recognition unit (B), which is also an amphiphile. When B is cast as a monolayer at the air-water interface and then A is introduced into the bulk solution, molecular recognition occurs generating an array of supramolecular 'ribbons' (ABABAB). One half of each ribbon is oriented in the gas phase, whilst the other half, which carries the polar moieties, penetrates the aqueous environment of the subphase presenting a uniquely organised functional surface. Given the appropriate design of the appended functionality, these dual recognition templates will catalyse the oriented nucleation of inorganic crystals from the subphase. The geometrically well-defined yet dynamic nature of the organic superstructure accommodates the structural requirements of the incipient mineral lattice to give rise to crystallographically unique particles. The programming of certain variables into (A) modulates the orientation, growth and morphology of the crystals thereby yielding important insights into the molecular mechanisms controlling the inorganic decoration of organic macromolecules.
