Summary on Grant Application Form
The rapid growth in the performance of optical transmission systems means optical switching is becoming an increasingly important issue in future optical communication networks and systems. The current major challenge for the application of optics in network switching is the practical realisation of optoelectronic switch matrices. Although a wide range of optical switches have been investigated in recent years, they typically remain costly or provide limited functionality, and hence need sophisticated additional electronic control. The consortium aims to use recent advances in switch design and fabrication technology to develop new types of optical routing matrix able to operate in circuit and packet switched TDM and WDM systems. The proposed matrix has three features:1. It can provide additional functions including amplification and monitoring, leading to simplified system implementation and control.2. It uses novel architectures which allow compact design and hence potentially improved yield.3. It uses recently developed fabrication, potentially leading to lower cost. The investigators will seek the advice and views of system users currently constructing network demonstrators, as these will influence the design of the switch. Full system tests will be carried out in demonstrators by users.
