Summary on Grant Application Form
Semiconducting oxide materials, at elevated temperature, are being intensively developed as gas-sensitive resistors, for applications including domestic and industrial safety monitoring and motor vehicle pollution control. This is a field in which, though the introduction of new materials, the UK has a clear technological lead over the (Japanese) competition. This proposal, for a concerted programme of theoretical and experimental; work, is to extend the science base underpinning this technological advance. It exploits our recent advances in computational modelling of surfaces (CRAC, AMS) and builds on a solid foundation of experimental work (DEW). Theoretical studies of surface composition and morphology, of the configuration and energetics of models for active sites and of gas absorption will be tied to measurements of segregation, gas absorption and electrical response to a range of gases offering response by both absorption and reaction. The systems (Cr203-Ti02, Sn02-Ti02, BaSn03, WO3) have been chosen from previous work, are technologically useful (CO, CO2, O3, NO2 measurement) and show a range of behaviour dependent on composition and preparation.
