Summary on Grant Application Form
Transport calculations for 2D carrier gases traditionally assume that both carriers and phonons are isotropic without introducing significant errors. In contrast to this PNB and MT have shown that the phonon drag contributions to the off-diagonal component of the magnetothermopower tensor, Sgxy, vanished unless the carriers and the phonons are both anisotropic. The aim of this proposal is to test and exploit this remarkable result. We have already derived a new formula for Sgxy when ?B <<1 where ? is the carrier mobility. We will test it by re-examining our previous analysis of electron data for GaAs quantum well (Part 2:[11]). To exploit the new formula we will analyse Warwick data for holes in a Si1-x Gex quantum well to determine how the hole and phonon anisotropies depend on alloy composition. Then we will extend our new formulae to deal with classical transport when ?B~1 and quantum transport when ?B>>1. These extrapolated formulae will be tested on old GaAs data for electrons (Part 2:[7, 8, 11]) and also applied to new hole data measured by BLG for GaAs (eg Part 2: [9]) and to be measured by TEW for Si1-x Gex and Ge quantum wells.
