We have created the interior of the knee joint numerically in a computer. This simulator can be used for training the surgical skills required for investigative procedure but as yet no reconstructive surgery is available on the simulator menu. We intend to use image sequences and animations derived from finite element analysis. (ANAYS 5.2) solutions linked to appropriate computer graphics to simulate the real time response of soft tissue to excision and suturing, combined with plug removal and boring of bone for the ACL reconstruction. Haemorrhage from blood vessels and their subsequent cauterisation in real time will also be addressed using the same approach. The graphics display will be supported by a multimedia intructional screen and database. The portfolio of physical solutions will be stored on compact disc for distribution to other scientists.
