Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is part of the LINK-Photonics programme involving GEC-Marconi Materials Technology Ltd, Diomed Ltd and the University of Wales College of Cardiff and the University of Manchester. Medical lasers in the 1 to 2?m region are to be developed based on laser diodes and diode pumped fibres. The Manchester group will (a) design, develop and evaluate prototype diode excited fibre lasers in the region of 2?m, (b) determine the effectiveness of the in-vitro and in-vivo interaction with a range of soft and hard bodily tissues using techniques of optical and electron microscopy, histology, thermal photography and flash photography and (c) develop laser diode coupling and pumping methods for efficient excitation.
