Summary on Grant Application Form |
The study is concerned with deriving a method of giving a residual service life prediction for reinforced concrete structures subject to corrosion attack. The principal assessment technique is linear polarisation resistance (LPR) measurement on the steel reinforcement. Initially, galvanostatic pulse transient analysis of reinforced concrete test specimens will be used to establish the optimum measurement parameters to be used for LPR for field measurements. Further test work will be devised to verify the suitability of a guard ring technique for use in accurately quantifying the measurement area during LPR measurement. The effects of environmental fluctuations on LPR measurement will also be studied, by recording experimental data for a laboratory cast reinforced concrete test slab, exposed outdoors.Field studies on corrosion damaged structures associated with the nuclear electricity generation industry will be used to coroborate the laboratory studies in order to estimate future corrosion. This will be linked in Phase 2 of the study to estimate the Residual Service Lifetime of damaged structures.
