The proposed work is part of a larger collaborative programme with the Institute of Petroleum and the Health and Safety laboratory and is concerned with high pressure tube failure within tube and shell heat exchangers, which may give rise to sudden pressure loadings in the liquid filled shell on a time scale which is short compared to the burst time of protective bursting disks. The objective is to relate the characteristics of the pressure pulses which can arise, to the dynamic bahaviour of the shell, with a view to understanding the conditions under which shell failure can occur. As a result of a series of full scale tube rupture tests being carried out by the IP, the provision of time resolved strain and pressure data will be available for the analysis. A programme of study using finite element analysis will be undertaken to interpret these results as well as others at the laboratory scale using a 4 shock tube. Results will be compared with current API guidelines.
