This programme will integrate expertise obtained by the principle investigators with literature search and operators knowledge to map out pre-choke production well environments in which hydrocyclone separators would be used for produced solids separation. Special factors of low/zero underflow and gas bubbles in the feed will need derivation of an optimised geometry via systematic experimentation in a rig having controllably variable liquid gas flows and solids content. The split ratio will also be varied. Conditions will simulate viscosity and voidage etc., but at low pressure.Following research with steady state flow, it will extend to unsteady feed flow via variable frequency modulation of liquid and gas flows, and to the need for low pressure drop applicable in pumped wells.Design features will include erosion resistant characteristics and also multi-unit layout for down hole or subsea wellhead. Expertise for the erosion resistance characteristics will be drawn from an other current research programme (Valve Link).
