Summary on Grant Application Form
Impregnated samples of collapsible Yellow Earth will be examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis with particular reference to (1) the pore spaces which permit collapse to occur, and (2) the nature and disposition of the cements which tend to prevent collapse. A parallel study of thin sections will be made with particular reference to the larger pores which are present in the samples. The results will be reviewed with respect to the conventional test results being obtained by the VF and the performance of these soils in the field. The VF will also implement a new version of an algorithm to analyse diffuse features seen in thin sections of clay soils. Whereas the VF's original algorithm required a special microscopy, the new version is for an ordinary polarising microscope. The VF will also visit University of East London to discuss joint work on micro-concrete.
