Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is based on the premise that a major sub-group of SMEs can have their manufacturing performance improved by the use of the appropriate groupware. This software support has to provide the most appropriate information in a way which enhances collaborative activity within the business and strengthens the rolse of the individual. The quality and consistency of the manufacturing capacity of the company is thus improved as a consequence of the use of the most appropriate information network. The scale and nature of the work contained in this application constitutes a significant and novel extension of research on human centred manufacture. A holonic information system (HIS) is proposed, with supporting implementation tools, as the basis for providing much more powerful and appropriate support to metalworking SMEs. Work packages devoted to the realisation of two major tools for use on the HIS, namely the holonic workstation and holonic distributed planning and control, are two major work packages of the research. The ideas in this research provide support for management. Company management would be expected to specify the network.
