Summary on Grant Application Form
Active databases extend traditional databases by supporting event-condition-action (ECA) rules which allows the DBMS to respond automatically to occurrences of events by executing actions if specified conditions are satisfied. Active databases provide a unifying approach to many advanced database features, including constraint enforcement, incremental view materialisation, triggers and production rules and have application in areas such as factory and office automation, network management, decision support and electronic trading. However, two major challenges facing implementers and users of active database technology are that (a) it can be difficult to predict how a set of ECA rules will behave, with detrimental effects on the reliability of active databases applications and (b) it is difficult to provide general-purpose optimisation of ECA rules. The aim of this proposal is to address these two issues by building on our recent work in the areas of formalisation of active databases and query optimisation in order to establish formal foundations for proving properties of ECA rule-sets and to develop an ECA rule optimiser for PFL.
