Summary on Grant Application Form |
The principal aim of the proposed research is to design, implement and evaluate several new solid-state NMR experiments suitable for investigations into the molecular structures and dynamics of heterogeneous materials. These experimental developments will include:1. New proton NMR experiments for the characterisation of structural heterogeneity in polymer blends which make use of newly available high-speed magic angle spinning instrumentation.2. Improvement in spectral resolution in NMR using novel schemes for heteronuclear decoupling, as well as variants of existing techniques which spread the information over extra frequency dimensions.3. New two-dimensional NMR experiments for characterising the geometry and the heterogeneity of slow molecular motions which determine the mechanical properties of polymers.4. New two-dimensional experiments for investigating connectivities between chemical sites in materials like zeolites. In conjunction with existing NMR techniques these new methods will be applied to several ongoing collaborative studies of:1. Heterogeneity in organic-inorganic nanocomposites.2. Structural heterogeneity and the nature of the interface in polymer blends.3. Proton transport in solids.
