Summary on Grant Application Form |
The goal of the project is to develop models which can be used to predict the heating effect produced by microwaves in human tissue. Such models will necessarily involve the solution of the electromagnetic field equations to determine how power is applied to the tissue and heat flow equations to determine how and where this power causes heating to occur. Currently there are commercial software packages which undertake these tasks separately and the models may involve coupling these together. Alternatively, it may be necessary to develop our own software. The ultimate goal is to use our models to help design microwave applicators for the treatment of conditions such as bladder cancer, cancer of the oesophagus and bowel cancer.
