Summary on Grant Application Form |
Fine particulate matter in the atmosphere is considered to be a current health problem and transport engines are possibly the main source of these fine particulate emissions. However, there are no detailed measurements of the composition of different size fractions in the atmosphere nor are there emissions inventories for each size fraction. The use of the particulate measurement equipment will enable measurements to be made in the atmosphere and engine exhausts that will provide some of the missing data and the information required on the contribution of SI and diesel engines to this problem. One specific engine problem will be analysed in detail and that is the accumulation of particulate matter in exhaust systems and the increase of particle size in the exhaust system, to a size that may correlate with the size distribution in the atmosphere. The equipment will be used for both engine exhaust and atmospheric particulate sampling at various locations. Some of the equipment is specific to the engine and car tests as it aims to investigate real road driving particulate emissions and to simulate these conditions that give particulate growth on a laboratory engine test bed.
