The aim of this part of the SSLAM LINK PHOTONICS proposal is to develop various laser diodes which will be manufactured by GEC(Caswell) for use in medicine. Other partners are the University of Manchester together with Diomed (Cambridge) who produce laser diode systems for medical applications. Marketable products based on these developments will provide surgical lasers ideally suited to Minimal Access Therapy (MAT). Much of the medical work requires laser light at long wavelength (1-3um) where there are body tissue absorption peaks. 1.45um-1.55um InP-based lasers will be examined with the objectives of maximising the wall-plug efficiency of the devices and understanding the origin of any degradation mechanisms. This will be achieved by means of time resolved photoluminescence measurements, and studies of both stimulated and spontaneous emission. A new development of our existing time resolved photoluminescence system will permit measurements to be made on 1.55um laser structures for the first time.
