This programme will realise a novel, non contact probe for the measurement of Young's and shear moduli and Poisson's ratio as a function of orientation in composite materials. The probe uses as optically generated multimode, broadband Lamb wave source coupled to a point optical fibre broadband interferometric detector.The probe produces dispersion curves for the first several Lamb wave modes and these in turn may be inverted to produce the necessary mechanical properties. The properties thus measured will be compared to these devices using conventional reference test instrumentation. Similar measurements using both the optical probe and the reference system will be conducted on damage and fatigued samples to determine the characteristics of in service wear profiles. The non contact method can also be applied to other mechanical measurements in difficult environments eg on hot or cold materials. Further, the method is unique in providing a simple means to address the orientational dependence of in-plane parameters in a rapid, straightforward manner. The possibility for laser induced surface damage is real and will be addressed in the research programme, possibly by using simple surface preparation. The technique will benefit users of composite materials in vehicles fuel storage etc, certifiers and insurers and instrument manufacturers, all of whom are represented in the programme collaborators.
