Summary on Grant Application Form
Modulated Differential Scanning Calorimetry (MDSC) will be used, in conjunction with Dynamic Dielectric Analysis, to monitor and quantify the state of cure in different representative thermosetting resin types. The range of cure conditions will include those relevant to the manufacturing of fibre reinforced composite structures. The information obtained will be used in development of kinetic and chemoviscosity models of resin cure, destined ultimately for real-time computer control of the composite manufacturing processes.Differential Scanning Calorimetry will also be used to examine the physical processes and metallurgical changes occurring during the exothermic reaction synthesis of intermetallic compounds, in real-time. The intermetallic compounds will be formed by reacting metallic bi- and tri-layers deposited by vacuum deposition. Thermodynamic models for intermetallic formation will be developed to predict the stability of such compounds as components in high temperature materials and in protection systems.
