Summary on Grant Application Form |
A slow muon beam line is being built at ISIS with support from the European Union (EU). The broad aim of this endeavour is to extend ?SR to surfaces and thin films by using the tunable low energy muon beam to probe depths in the range sub-nm to several hundred nm. The EU support provides for a basic beam line, but does not extend to a sample chamber which has multi-user capabilities, and which has reasonable sample turnaround time whilst still offering the opportunity of cooling/heating the sample. The present proposal is to customise the ISIS slow muon facility to provide such capabilities. The first new science using this facility will be performed by UCL. Subsequently, the facility will be made available to the wider academic community to support a broad range of condensed matter research, in particular in the areas of catalysis and materials as identified in the technology foresight generic science priorities.
