Summary on Grant Application Form |
This joint project between Oxford and UCL aims to simulate flow past fixed offshore structures based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Emphasis will be placed on modelling the non-linear free surface effects. The flow field will be discretised by triangular (in 2D) and tetrahedral (in 3D) finite elements. The element mesh will follow and adapt to the flow, using unstructured hierarchical grids. It is intended also to consider advancing front and Delaunay methods. The RANS equations will be discretised using Petrov-Galerkin finite elements, and the turbulence closure will be supplied by DERA. Validation will be conducted using two and three dimensional test cases, involving comparison with alternative simulation (eg for potential flow with non-linear free surface effects), and with such experimental results as are available.
