Summary on Grant Application Form |
Deterioration of concrete bridges is a major problem and the DoT spends approximately 150M per annum on maintenance. This expenditure can be reduced by early detection of defects. The proposed programme aims to develop optical fibres based technology for the long term monitoring of the structural integrity of bridges. This will be carried out by attaching to (or embedding in) concrete bridge members a network of strain sensors based on in-fibre Bragg gratings. The following issues will be addressed: The optimum multiplexing topology for interrogating a large number of gratings (we shall investigate wavelength, spatial and temporal multiplexing techniques); the optimum signal processing scheme; the problem of cross sensitivity to temperature. Once these issues have been settled, a suitable network and associated signal processing unit will be assembled and fully evaluated in test beams and in a bridge, so long as a suitable candidate can be identified.
