Summary on Grant Application Form
Many small structures such as macro-molecules, clusters and viruses have specific patterns of charge that play an important role in their docking to other structures and so to their physical, chemical and biological modification. In principle the concept of charge-writing to inorganic substrates could simulate such docking sites and so lead to a programmable system for selecting specific structures for nanotechnological or chemical purposes. This feasibility study will examine theoretical aspects of doing this in practice and so identify potential configurations for a demonstration system that can capture selectively particles of about 100 nm. An STM will be modified to undertake the charge writing at a scale of around 20 nm and then used with suitable substrates in an attempt to capture highly regular particles such as uncoated viruses. The success of this feasibility demonstration will be used as a starting point for full-scale research into the development of the technology.
