Summary on Grant Application Form
Many of the future mobile and broadband distribution networks plan to use millimetre-waves as the radio carrier. It will be necessary to provide large numbers of base stations for these networks and the complexity of the base stations and the overall networks costs could be reduced dramatically if the millimetre-wave signal could be modulated onto an optical carier which was then distributed by means of optical fibre networks. This would allow low loss ditributionof the mm-wave signals to the base stations. This approach, known as fibre-radio, requires techniques to be developed for the generation of high qualtiy mm-wave midulated optical signals. The main aim of the propsed research is the development of viable methods for the generation, modulation and detachtion of mm-wave modulated optical carriers using novel optical sources of high purity mm-wave modulated optical signals. When detached the mm-wave signals produced by these techniques will have linewidths ??? to be stable to) better than 10Hz.
