Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is for the development of an advanced hardware and software platform for data-processing in nondestructive testing (NDT). Particular emphasis will be placed on ultrasonic testing, to offer rapid, flexible manipulation and presentation of complete 3D data sets, with intelligent processing options to automatically highlight possible defective regions within an imported CAD model of the test component. The system is intended to assist the NDT engineer in his task of screening large volumes of defect-free material, such that he will be better focused on the relatively rare instances of truly abnormal signal patterns. The software will further assist the NDT engineer in the analysis of a defect, by providing a range of tools for the task of determining its character, size, type, orientation and position. In particular instances where the analysis procedure is well defined and highly repetative, the human expert will be able to program the rules of a local knowledge based system (KBS) using the tool outputs as data sources to offer a full analysis capability.
