Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal requests the purchase of a state-of-the-art FEGTEM instrument, with thermally-assisted emission, to provide a capability which combines high-current nanoprobe analysis with full microstructural materials characterisation. This would be, at present, a unique facility in the UK and would permit the attainment of two general objectives. The first is the enhancement of the existing Sorby Centre at the University of Sheffield to provide an outstanding UK North-East Regional Centre for Advanced Electron Microscopy with external user access to the new instrument. The University has given strong backing to this project both by cash contribution and by the planned provision of high-quality experimental space in newly commissioned accommodation. The second objective is the completion of an exacting programme of nanoprobe-based analytical studies applied to a wide range of advanced materials, including semiconductors, metals and ceramics. This work involves extensive collaboration both with other members of the University of Sheffield and with colleagues at external industrial- an government- based organisations.
