Electrochemical systhesis can offer significant advantages over conventional chemical processes. The selectivity of the desired reaction can be controlled and operating conditions are at near ambient temperature and pressure. The production of chemcial waste streams is minimised and the need for complex separation processes or elaborate high pressure reactors is avoided. Electrochemical processes commonly operate in a batch recycle mode, leading to inefficiency and in some cases difficulties in linking with continuous upstream and downstream processes. Conventional electrochemical processes normally require operating conditions with a high rate of surface mass transport and a long residence time to obtain good conversion. The use of pulsed flow to achieve high mass transport rates coupled with a small steady flow component to obtain a long residence time would allow electrosynthesis to be operated in a continuous manner. It is envisaged that this technology will be applicable to a wide range of organis synthesis applications including: pharmaceuticals, food additives; and organic chemical and intermediates.
