Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will develop and apply mesoscopic modelling techniques to questions of processing and design of soft-solid products formed of concentrated multi-phase systems. One part of the project will develop and validate interactions laws between particle surfaces. Another part will generalise our current codes to handle shaped particles, agglomerates and deformable units. Using these software tools we will generate new understanding on the relation between the condition of particle surfaces and bulk flow, depletion effects at walls, structure/flow relations, polydispersity and deformability and bulk flow. A third part of the project involves transferring the techniques onto applications within Unilever and collaborating with modelling teams in Unilever. A collaboration with Imperial College which will add these techniques as a component in the integration across scales required by process modelling. This project will realise the widely recognised but yet unfilled potential of these techniques and provide invaluable experience for future applications in a broad range of industries.
