|
It has been internationally agreed that, following the retirement of Prof. J. Neubuser in 1997, oversight of the development of the GAP system will be transferred to St Andrews.Within the context of this development, this application seeks support for three mutually beneficial activities: development of new algorithms and related theory; implementation of these algorithms; and application of the resulting programs to open questions in mathematics. The research areas chosen, both for their intrinsic interest and for their relevance to the needs of GAP development are: p-adic methods, finite-dimensional algebras (especially descent algebras) and finitely-presented structures (especially methods related to coset enumeration). Software will be implemented in sufficient generality and with sufficient robustness for incorporation in the published GAP system.The project will also support the general development of GAP, including the integration of contributions far around the world and necessary developments of the underlying system.
