Summary on Grant Application Form |
A low wear, high hardness wide band gap coating of amorphous diamond-like carbon silicon alloy will be designed, prepared and characterised in terms of its bonding, mechanical and tribological properties. The addition of Si to diamond-like carbon greatly improves the adhesion of such coatings, by lowering their intrinsic stress, and extending the region of their low friction coefficient up to 60% humidity. The friction mechanism at low and high humidity will be deduced by study of the wear track by reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy.
